Eventually, in 1997, the GLP-1 medicine she helped develop entered clinical research.

The drug was called liraglutide.

Later came the next generation: semaglutide.

In 2021, the 2.4 mg dose of semaglutide received FDA approval for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with related health conditions. In clinical trials, participants receiving semaglutide achieved substantial average weight loss.

In 2023, Science highlighted a broader shift in how obesity is understood: obesity is increasingly recognized as a chronic disease rooted in biology, rather than simply a matter of weak willpower.

That change in perspective may be just as important as the development of the medicine itself.

When GLP-1-based treatments reached China, they attracted significant attention. For many people struggling with obesity, the message was powerful:

“Maybe my failure to lose weight was not simply a lack of willpower.”
